It is frustrating when our aging houses become less sustainable in the desert when they are flipped for profit. Instead of installing light colored roofs that are cooler, they often install cheaper (I guess) black roofs! Or is it for appearances sake? Our insulators say it is up to 30 degrees hotter in the crawl spaces of those dark roofs.
Another frustrating trend is to remove native trees from the yard. Those trees provide cooling shade (with little watering) as well as habitat and food for native birds. Again, for appearances sake.
